Concrete posts and repair spurs

Concrete posts and repair spurs

This blog post is going to go into the ins and outs of incorporating concrete into your wooden fence. The two main ways to do this are by using concrete H slotted posts and concrete repair spurs.  Hopefully, by the end of this blog, you’ll consider using concrete alongside wood in your next fence.

The Concrete repair spurs are brilliant and are growing in popularity, given that in recent years the weather has really taken its toll on fence posts. Particularly, I’m talking about the strong wind which has come along with the numerous heavy storms in the last few years. The strength of the wind blowing against a fence panel which is connected to a fence post puts a lot of the strain onto the post, therefore leaving it susceptible to cracking and breaking. A concrete repair spur is the best way to support your wooden fence post and give it the best chance to withstand the elements. A huge bonus of opting for a repair spur is that they can be easily secured to your existing posts with postcrete and/ or coach bolts. This leads to the next thing to note about concrete repair spurs is that if your post has shown signs of rotting, cracking or loosening then a repair spur can allow you to sufficiently reinforce the fence and leave it standing strong.

H slotted concrete posts may be almost double the price of wooden posts, but you get what you pay for. This is not to say that wooden posts aren’t worth purchasing because they are extremely strong and visually the best match with fence panels so they’re still an amazing option. That being said, a concrete post is a structural upgrade on a wooden one. The strength of the post is almost incomparable, a concrete post is not susceptible to rotting or snapping in the wind. We supply concrete H slotted posts in heights of 6ft, 8ft and 10ft, which ensures there is the size to fit your fence. There is also the option to have corner posts which allows you to place the panels just as easily at a right angle.

Going back to the idea of the storms, concrete posts offer a unique opportunity for protecting your fence panels. If your property is particularly exposed, like being on the top of a hill, then the panels may be at risk of breaking under the strain of the wind. The solution which concrete posts offer is that if you know a large storm is coming then you are able to lift the fence panels up and out from in between the posts. This also allows you to easily replace the panels once they have reached the end of their life cycle which you wouldn’t be able to do with conventional wooden posts.

To wrap things up, we wanted just to re-emphasise the structural benefits which adding concrete to your fence can have. It has to be noted that it is an extra expense and not necessary for your fence. However, if you do choose to invest in concrete then it will help to protect the rest of your fence and therefore will potentially save you money in the long run.
